Foster To Adopt

Building a strong foundation

The primary goal for the foster children we serve is permanency – providing a safe, stable home in which to live and grow through a life-long relationship with a nurturing caregiver. Foster families can be licensed as foster-to-adopt parents as many of the children and teens who come into our care are eligible for adoptions.

Adopting from foster care

Reuniting the child with the birth family is the initial objective in foster care. However, due to safety concerns or other considerations, that is not always possible.

There are currently more than 100,000 children in foster care who are eligible for adoption. It is also possible that parental rights become terminated after a child is placed in a foster home, and our foster families often choose to adopt these children.

*States such as Pennsylvania offer Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) services, ​including post-adoption services to PA families that have provided permanency through adoption from foster care, private adoption, international adoption, formal kinship care and permanent legal custodianship (PLC) as free services.

Fostering children prior to adoption has many benefits, including:

  • Reducing the number of moves a child makes
  • Allowing relationships to evolve and bonds to form prior to adoptions
  • Developing the parenting skills necessary to deal with the trauma a child may have experienced.
